Connected Homes - Smart Device Monthly Incentives

Info for: ResidentialCommercialEducationCommunityContractorsEconomic Development

The Connected Homes program allows HG&E and its customers to save energy, costs and carbon emissions by allowing HG&E to control the usage of select Wi-Fi-enabled smart devices a few times each month. Customers can receive a $5-$8/month incentive for enrolling an eligible thermostat, water heater, or mini-split controller in this program!

Background: The goal of this program is to reduce the amount of electricity used in HG&E’s territory during certain times when the demand for electricity throughout the New England grid is highest. These periods are known as “peak events” and typically occur between 4 and 8 p.m. During these events, the cost to HG&E for electricity is highest so reducing demand during these times helps us maintain lower electric rates for all customers. It also saved on carbon emissions! This is because during these peak events, higher-emitting back-up power plants have to turn on in order to provide enough electricity being consumed by the grid.

How it Works: By enrolling an eligible device in this program, you allow HG&E to virtually make brief, limited adjustments to your device, reducing the associated electric use. You will typically experience two to three adjustments per month, though as many as five could occur. Incentives are received as an on-bill credit and are applied quarterly based on your participation. Please see below for additional device-specific information. If you have any questions, please contact or call our main office at (413) 536-9300.
