History Holyoke is America’s first planned industrial city, situated on the banks of the Connecticut River. Industry was originally drawn to the river’s natural 57 foot drop, and the power held within its potential. Wealthy investors constructed a large granite dam and a 4.5 mile multi-level canal system in the late-1800s drawing textile and later paper manufacturers to the City.
Today, the dam and canal system provides an ample source of low-cost electricity and water for process manufacturing uses. The planned nature of the City allows for excellent traffic flow whether it be by railcar or truck. Interstate 391 provides a convenient link to I-91 and Springfield, while I-91 and I-90 cross in the City’s Ingleside neighborhood.
Utility Services
Electric Service Despite the unpredictable New England climate, our electric distribution system has a 99.995% in-service time. Our robust distribution network can even provide your business with redundant electrical feeds from multiple substations, thus further increasing our already impressive reliability rating.
HG&E is also proud to offer some of New England’s most competitive electric rates. And we can offer your business additional discounts for primary metering or transformer ownership.
We even provide an extra 10% prompt payment discount to customers who pay their bills within 15 days of receipt.

Natural Gas Service Natural gas is convenient. Piped directly into your business, it eliminates your dependency on oil trucks that may have difficulty delivering in bad weather. And unlike oil, with natural gas you only pay for what you use - after you use it.
HG&E offers a variety of rate options for your business including: interruptible service, where your business enjoys a lower per unit rate for gas, providing that you can suspend consumption during periods of peak system demand; and some of the lowest rates in New England for large industrial customers. Inquire about additional incentives including: interest-free assistance for the conversion to natural gas and special rate discounts for new or expanding businesses.
